Rifle scopes are so important that hunters and competitive shooters often pay the same price as their rifles when buying these optical devices. Hunting scopes have different kinds and different sizes based on the range and their purposes. You have to make your choice according to your needs like what type of animals you are hunting or how big they are.
Moreover, each scope works differently on each hunting rifle as the manufacture is different. In this article, we are going to describe how scopes work, aiming at your target while hunting.

How do scope lenses work?

Scopes comes with more than eight lenses for orientation, aiming and magnification. A normal hunting scope contains- magnifying lens, objective lens, ocular lens and erector lens. The objective lens is situated in front of the scope to focus objects. The ocular lens stays in the back that allows the hunter to see what they are going to aim at.

After getting into the objective lens, your targeted image transfers towards the erector lens. The image gets flipped to the orientation by the meeting point of the objective and erector lens. After that, the target image sent over a magnifying lens and then on the ocular lens. The ocular lens is the closest lens to the hunter’s eye that displays the target.
The description below would show you how important optics are. A picture is given here for better understanding.

The big part of the tube is the objective lens that is far away from the hunter’s eye. You should be aware about the size of Bell housing on the rifle. Because you would need a different scope or high mounting rings if the Bell Housing is much larger. This could be the source of poor eye orientation. The coating over the objective lens improves the target transmission. Weight and material of the lens plays an important role, so try to choose a lens of 40 mm if you have problems with extra weight.

An inner tube configuration that contains magnification lens, erector lens and the reticle is called erector lens assembly. When the image goes through the reticle, the target image knocks the erector lens that orients the target image and then it hits the magnification lens. 1st focal plane scope contains reticles before magnification lens and 2nd focal plane scopes positioned the reticle at the end of the magnification lens. Some manufacturers combine the erector lens with reticles and magnification lens while some others have separated these features. If you want to buy a good configuration hunting scope, choose a quality company.

What is FFP and SFP:

FFP means first focal plane and SFP means second focal plane and it is important to know about these technologies in hunting or rifle scopes. As the reticle stays behind the magnification lens in SFP, the object would appear the same. The configuration of the magnification lens doesn’t matter there. FFP contains the reticle before the magnification lens. So, the object changes as magnification goes down or up.

The shooters choose to use FFP configuration though SFP technology is standard for decades. FFP technologies have improved ammunition, firearm materials and optics that allows you to use this for long-range hunting. For getting the highest magnification, SFP works best.

You could adjust the magnification down or up by the power ring on your scope. The magnification level would be marked as 2 to 25 times and beyond. This means that the object is 2 times or 25 times closer than our eye.

Ocular lens assembly focuses the image from objective and erector lens assembly. Before buying a hunting scope, you should check the quality of eyepiece assembly, coating and the ocular lens.

How does the magnification of a scope work?

Objective lens is located away from the user. The light of the image passes over the objective lens and hits the erector lens. The duty of the erector lens is to flip the target image so that it won’t seem upside down and after that, the flipped image passes through the magnifying lens. You could adjust the power of it according to your needs by using a power ring. Finally, the lights travel to the ocular lens that is observable to the user. Lenses of a scope is the most significant part of the hunting scope.

How do the adjustment of a scope work?

You could target your hunt through adjusting the external parts properly. You would find dials and turrets on the sides and top of the basic tube.

  • Windage adjustment helps for placing the bullet left or right
  • Elevation adjustment could impact the bullet up and down
  • Parallax adjustment helps to focus the target
  • Magnification adjustment helps positioning the image near your eyes as much as possible

Hunting scopes are the best part of the technology. Choose the right one for you by considering all the necessary things and materials that are described above. Don’t forget to check the coating and quality of the optics because it plays a vital role in hunting.
